Continuous Personal Development

Just over a week ago, I paid up to become an entry-level member of the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders (CIEP) as part of my move towards a new career path.

Today, I started the first of several training courses that will give me the qualifications to prove myself to potential clients.

It has already been made clear to me that when it comes to spelling and grammar checking, software is over-eager to correct little things but unable to discern inconsistencies and human error. Which makes sense, as otherwise there wouldn’t be a market for copyeditors or proofreaders!

(Incidentally, I’d include services like Grammarly in that bracket. I have used it, and while it can spot a lot of things, it’s no substitute for actually reading the text with fresh eyes.)
