Declaring Amazon Bankruptcy

This morning I contacted Amazon UK to request the closure of my account. I’ve already removed all the various apps from my devices.

They sent me a long detailed email about what would happen if I proceeded with closure, and I had to reply to confirm that I wished to proceed.

Doing so means letting go of all the Kindle e-books and Audible audiobooks I’ve purchased over the years, but I’m reconciled to the fact that I’ll never get around to reading them all. It will also mean losing the few comics I purchased from Comixology, also owned by Amazon.

I will probably repurchase some items in physical form in the future, as and when I need them. To be honest, that’s probably a good thing, as it’ll force me to sell or give away stuff currently on my bookshelves to make space.

I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts that I’ve been cutting back my use of Amazon’s services and looking to alternatives, but until now, that has been a half-hearted exercise. Shutting down my account will force me to make good on that desire. Yes, it’s a radical step, perhaps extreme. But I feel a sense of relief that I’m no longer mentally locked into Amazon as the default option for online shopping.
