More iOS 14 Gripes
- I finally figured out how to get the Reminders widget to display just today’s reminder — you need to long-press the widget then tap ‘Edit Widget’. Obvious? No, not at all. More to the point, why wasn’t Today the default, as it was in iOS 13?
- There doesn’t appear to be any way to break up a stack, or remove widgets from a stack. And it’s easy to accidentally create a stack, particularly on the iPhone SE 1.
- Yes, I know Apple has the Tips app that’s supposed to show me how to use new features, but I’d uninstalled it because I found it supremely unhelpful for me. They should really consider having a What’s New feature added as part of a major iOS update, and having it be smart enough to know what Apple apps and widgets you have on your device and tailor its guidance to those.
- Somehow, deleted emails were being purged from Mail after just one day when I have them set to only be purged after 31 days at Fastmail. I installed the Fastmail app, then removed my Fastmail account from iOS, and the problem went away. Not impressed!
- Given the changes to widgets in iOS 14, I’m even more surprised that Apple decided to release it so suddenly. Not only did they put app developers in a tight spot, but users would have found their devices updated to a new iOS that changed their widgets.
- The only upside I’ve found has been that the BBC Weather widget no longer crashes back to the home screen when tapping to launch the app itself.
