How to buy a computer in 1983

The Guardian have preserved this article from the late Jack Schofield’s first column for the paper’s then-new computer section, How to buy a computer in 1983. It’s instructive now to see just how many different hardware platforms there were back then, with very little to no compatibility between then. Also, imitation of popular games was very much the fashion.

While the number of options may be fewer today, and compatibility better, I’m wondering how much else has really changed from what Jack described back in 1983.
