Well, it’s official now: all BBC radio stations (and most likely all podcasts too) are gone from TuneIn Radio.

The BBC seem determined to silo all their radio content inside the BBC Sounds app.

If they take podcasts off of Overcast, I’ll be pissed off!

Good news: Hazel 4.4 now support macOS Catalina.

Bad news: Mac apps that make use of Preference panes may need to start making plans to rewrite their software.

Native vs Web

OS Compatibility and the Web

Mark Hughes:

This is why the web beats native applications. You can indeed make a better interface in native code; you can’t maintain it, and you can’t port it. The native dev is constantly chasing a new API that breaks everything past, and fighting with garbage tools like Xcode. The web dev just needs ed or another text editor, and only has to target the browser, which is a moving target but has backfills and a compatibility policy, and native browsers generally work on the last two major OS releases.

As someone who had been both a software developer and a web designer at various points in my career, I can say from experience that the websites I designed might not work as fully today, but at least they can be opened and viewed. Native apps will always be able to do more, but the OS foundation they sit on will always be at risk of breakage or even deprecation.

People deride web apps packaged using Electron or similar, and some of that derision is deserved, particularly memory consumption. But, increasingly, such cross-platform apps make a lot more sense, both from a development and end-user perspective.

The Ins and Outs of Non-destructive Editing in Photos for Mac and iOS

Filing this for future reference. Also, I have way too many Photos extensions—a cull is required.

Moved all of my writing back to Ulysses. My journalling workflow will need rejigging, but that should be doable. And I’ll have a consistent writing environment whatever device I’m on.

My Markdown editing setup in Sublime Text has broken somehow. Bold and italic text has stopped rendering properly, the text is highlighted but the font doesn’t change. Not sure where the problem lies.

Today I bought the MacSparky Keyboard Maestro Field Guide. I’ve been using Keyboard Maestro for a while now, and it’s super useful, but I know I’m barely using its full potential.

Dear Valued Customer…

So I received the following email today from Adobe.

Dear Valued Customer,

At Adobe, we always strive to deliver more value to our customers, including much requested new features and capabilities, critical bug fixes and security updates. For these reasons we recommend all customers use the latest release of our Creative Cloud applications.
We have recently discontinued certain older versions of Creative Cloud applications and as a result, under the terms of our agreement, you are no longer licensed to use them. Based on your preference settings, we are not able to see if you are using any of the discontinued versions.
Please be aware that should you use the discontinued version(s), you may be at risk of potential claims of infringement by third parties.

Please upgrade to the latest version(s) using the instructions below. By upgrading, you will continue to receive all the value that Creative Cloud has to offer.

It goes on with more details, but you get the drift.

  • They know my name, but can’t be arsed to do a basic mail-merge.
  • Oddly, they’ve yet to get around to implement ‘stop taking several minutes to start up one of our apps.’
  • Thankfully, I don’t use either Acrobat or Flash, so that’s a lot fewer critical bug fixes and security updates I need.

  • A helpful reminder that I don’t own my Adobe software any more.
  • I’m entirely unsurprised that the Creative Cloud desktop app doesn’t know what versions of their software I’ve got installed. That thing is a POS.
  • It’s just as well that other sites have revealed WTH that reference to ‘risk of potential claims of infringement by third parties’ means. Cos Adobe sure as heck won’t tell me.

  • The ‘value’ of Creative Cloud these days seems to be primarily Adobe’s, in terms of keeping people hooked onto their apps and services.

Yes, I’m jaded. Can you tell?

I’ve tried Drafts on iOS, but I just can’t figure out how to get it doing what I want. Same with Shortcuts. I think the problem for me is that there’s no Help system in iOS. That’s what I always turned to on Mac and Windows.

While I like Typora a lot for journalling, the lack of an auto-save is a major downside for me. So I’m going to switch back to Sublime Text, which I’ve adapted with packages specifically aimed at writers. Maybe not the nicest looking solution, but it fits me well.
